is a profile of Lion Mike Binder taken from the January 1997 "LEAGUE
CITY LIONS ROAR" when he was named Lion of the Month.
Lion Mike Binder was born in Detroit, January 25, 1948. He married
Brenda in 1971. They were married in the same church where his parents
were married. They have one daughter, Susan who majored in accounting
at Texas A & M University.
Lion Mike was a graduate of Michigan State University (was a third
generation MSU graduate), with a BA in Accounting. He was a Certified
Public Accountant and a Certified Data Processor. He had seven years
in Public Accounting with Arthur Anderson & Company in Detroit,
and Ernest & Whinney in Houston.
He served in the U S Army - 1968-1970. He was in Artillery in Viet
Nam 1969-1970.
Lion Mike started in banking in 1977 in a small bank in northern
Michigan. He was Executive Vice President & Cashier of League
City Bank & Trust starting in February 1994. He was responsible
for the operations division of the Bank, which was pretty much everything
except the lending officers.
He moved to Houston in 1981, bought a home on the west side of town.
His daily commute to work in League City was 100 miles.
Lion Mike's spouse, Brenda is also a graduate of Michigan State
University with a BSN. She has her masters from UTHSC-Houston Associate
Professor of Nursing, and a Ph.D. from Texas Woman's University.
She is an Associate Professor of Nursing, and Director of the Graduate
Nursing Program at Houston Baptist University. She is also a Pediatric
Nurse Practitioner. She was honored by the Texas Nursing Association
as an Outstanding Nurse during their Nursing Celebration 1996.
Lion Mike became a member of the League City Lions Club in the fall
of 1994, and moved quickly and was elected President of the club
in 1996. He also chaired the Lions Village Fair which is a tremendous
undertaking and he did a great job. He was named "Lion of the
Year." He also received the "Melvin Jones Fellow"
Award.
As president of the club Lion Mike attended not only all the club's
Regular & Directors meetings, but he also realized the importance
of attending the District and Zone meeting. He worked in every Lions
project.
One of his brother-in-laws is director of the puppy breeding program
for Leader Dogs. On vacation in the summer of 1996 he toured the
school in Rochester, Michigan. He was very impressed with the facility.
He encouraged any one in the area to stop for a visit. The staff
and volunteers are very proud of their operation, and enjoy showing
Lions what they support.
Lion Mike Binder was not only a "SUPER LION" but also
a "VERY SPECIAL PERSON" and will be missed by all who
knew him.
